MRI results

MRI results
I don’t know if the news is good or bad. I just got off the phone with my doc who shared the results of last weeks MRI with me. I have a stress fracture in the upper part of my tibia, right below the knee. The MRI shows the bone swelling and a series of microfractures. NO Running for at least 6 weeks. Take Vit D and Calcium…

At this point, for what I have been through, that sounds okay to me! As long as I am pain free I am given the okay to bike and swim and use the elliptical. I only hope the MRI is showing the real problem!

Sooo...I must cancel my plans for Cheat Mountain Moonshine Madness 50M and Laurel Valley 30+ next month…

I guess I have had this for 3 months! What caused the stress fracture? Perhaps a combo of 3 things:
1)Return to training hard after 8 weeks on the shelf due to a bruised bone in my knee in Dec and Jan

2)More speed work as I ran with my friend Carrie who was readying for Boston

3)New shoes-I started to wear the Streaks a bunch-perhaps too light compared to what I was used to?

I am glad to be informed and will spend some time researching stress fractures this week!

Ouch ! Below the knee. Take the time off, rest off, and come back 100 times stronger !

Annette,
Sorry to hear about your injury, stress fractures can be a big bummer. I can personally attest to it as I am just recovering from two fractures, one in my tibia and one in my fibula. I basically ramped up the miles too fast and added too many races to my roster. By the time I had to stop because of pain, the fractures had been there about a month.
here is to a speedy recovery..

I had a very similar results following Holiday Lakes. No running for 6 weeks just about killed my but the bike and swim saved my mental state.

Now that I am back to running I am pulling faster times than I ever did. AMAZING.

Sounds like you are working with the right people. SMART GIRL!

So that was the problem!!! OK, it stinks, but at least you KNOW what it was that wasn't going away and you have a plan to deal with it. You will come back stronger, no doubt.

Amazing to me that you were running so hard and strong with a stress fracture. You and Tiger....

My son has surgery to repair a torn ACL/meniscus on Thursday, so I have been going through some similar frustration and disappointment here at home, and will be thinking of you while you heal up, Annette!

Big hugs to you,
S

Annette,

I wish you a quick recovery. This will make you stronger in the end even if you don't see it right now. All the best!

Sorry to hear about the injury Annette.
I also went in to get an MRI around my knee area as I have been struggling with several injuries since December, and came away with a laundry list problems.
All year, everyone I've gone to seems to have been scared to tell me to stop running. I kept getting "as long as you can put up with the pain, go for it". I kept going for it until last Saturday night when I ended up walking 3 1/2miles using more trekking poles than legs (I had to pick up the poles on the second lap of a 12 hour run because the descents hurt so much-hmm maybe that should have been a sign).
I had my epiphany out there at about 2:00am and am self prescribing 4 weeks off.
I wish you the best in your recovery.

I am currently recovering from the exact same injury, right on the tibial medial plateau, brought on by insufficient recovery time after a 100k. I'm on crutches for 3-6 weeks and haven't been able to bike/elliptical/pool run because it leaves the tibia super sore. At least there's weight training and core work to be done. There's no messing around with bones, just got to let them heal... in their own time... which is never soon enough!

I hope that your recovery is progressing along smoothly and speedily!

The MRI report needs to be taken with seriousness. The physicians recommendation and the medication coupled with rest should help undo the damage.

But dont aggravate the injury even if it means off running, or off elliptical or cycling.
